The Firm

Mason Lockhart and Josh Muir are pleased to announce that Lockhart Legal changed name to Lockhart Muir on 23 January 2023.


Our Story

Lockhart Legal was established on 1st October 2009 by Mason Lockhart on his return to New Zealand after working as a Senior Legal Advisor for Heineken International in Amsterdam. In February 2011, Lockhart Legal acquired the practice of Derek Cutting & Co and the practice shifted from Newton to 31-33 Great South Road, Auckland . Lockhart Legal then acquired the practices of David Thwaite in May 2012 and John Sellers in July 2015. In March 2021 the practice moved to Level 1, 7 Owens Road, in Epsom, Auckland.

In June 2017 Josh Muir joined the firm and injected a new commercial client base. Josh joined Mason as a director and shareholder of Lockhart Legal in April 2019.

In January 2023, the name of the firm was changed to Lockhart Muir to reflect this partnership.

In February 2023, Lockhart Muir acquired the practice of Horrocks Hampton, which resulted in the opening of a second office for Lockhart Muir in Takapuna, Auckland.

The firm continues to enjoy strong organic growth thanks to recommendations and referrals from Mason and Josh’s loyal clients.

Josh has a robust background advising clients on a diverse range of commercial and commercial property matters. His expertise spans property acquisitions, property development, property finance, subdivisions, unit title developments, leasing, and commercial structuring. Josh also has a loyal private client following and provides advice in relation to all private client matters.

Josh adopts an open and transparent approach in his legal practice. He prioritises the facilitation of efficient, pragmatic, and cost-effective solutions for his clients with a primary focus on cultivating a high-calibre team dedicated to achieving these objectives and ensuring that clients consistently receive precise and meaningful advice while optimising both value and effectiveness.

  • Providing end-to-end advice on a number of residential, commercial, forestry, and industrial property/land development projects, from the initial planning stages of the project to the ultimate sales and/or leases of the completed properties along with everything in between (including due diligence matters, overseas investment matters, dealings with local council, and removal of impediments in Court).
  • Providing strategic counsel to large construction, manufacturing, and FMCG companies in various high value (and often first of its kind) contracts and arrangements.
  • Advising on large company transactions and complex shareholding arrangements.
  • Advising on an employee share scheme for a publicly listed company.
  • Advising on various private wealth and trust structuring matters for high-net-worth individuals.
  • Acting as trustee and executor (often as the sole trustee/executor) on multiple trusts and estates.
  • Advising on the establishment and day to day operations of non-bank lenders.
  • Advising on $500m+ of non-bank lending transactions.
