Mason Lockhart and Josh Muir are pleased to announce that Lockhart Legal changed name to Lockhart Muir on 23 January 2023.
Lockhart Legal was established on 1st October 2009 by Mason Lockhart on his return to New Zealand after working as a Senior Legal Advisor for Heineken International in Amsterdam. In February 2011, Lockhart Legal acquired the practice of Derek Cutting & Co and the practice shifted from Newton to 31-33 Great South Road, Auckland . Lockhart Legal then acquired the practices of David Thwaite in May 2012 and John Sellers in July 2015. In March 2021 the practice moved to Level 1, 7 Owens Road, in Epsom, Auckland.
In June 2017 Josh Muir joined the firm and injected a new commercial client base. Josh joined Mason as a director and shareholder of Lockhart Legal in April 2019.
In January 2023, the name of the firm was changed to Lockhart Muir to reflect this partnership.
In February 2023, Lockhart Muir acquired the practice of Horrocks Hampton, which resulted in the opening of a second office for Lockhart Muir in Takapuna, Auckland.
The firm continues to enjoy strong organic growth thanks to recommendations and referrals from Mason and Josh’s loyal clients.

Director
Mason founded Lockhart Muir in 2009 on his return to New Zealand, with the objective of providing outstanding legal advice and excellent client service to both SME’s and private clients drawing on his experience both in private practice and as an in-house counsel.
His commercial clients appreciate his pragmatic approach of advising on a wide range of matters in a wide range of industries. In particular he has a keen interest in matters relating to the sale of businesses , shares and shareholder agreements and presented to the New Zealand Law Society on these agreements. He also has expertise on general commercial contracts such as distribution and supplier agreements.
Mason has a large private client base and acts for them on residential conveyancing, relationship property, estate planning and family trust issues. He has expertise in advising on challenging trust and estate matters having been the court appointed executor on a number of occasions. Having trained as a mediator he is able to remain impartial, obtain a deep understanding of the issues swiftly and guide the parties to a resolution.
Mason and his wife have two busy daughters, and love spending time together in New Zealand’s great outdoors. Mason regularly participates in masters swimming, enjoys cycling and is a great spectator sportsman.
